DANCING IN WAILUA
I honestly don’t know how it’s possible having visited this spot once before, but leave it to us to take the wrong route down. No biggie though…we repelled by the available roots and headed toward the sound of the cascading shimmer. And through the trees, there it was!
This is certainly the most heavily Instagrammed waterfall of Kauai so in an attempt to preserve its magic I won’t say much else about how to get there, but I encourage you to find your ‘adventurous side’ and let it guide you.
The last time we were here was rainy season and I can hardly describe what it was like to stand within 50 yards of this thing. It was like Niagara…in the jungle. Absolutely incredible.
But no rain today. Just another day in paradise.
The falls were looking as picture perfect as ever, falling with a simplistic elegance into a pool of rainbowy-mist and blue-green ripples. We were the first ones down there this morning. The early bird gets the solitude….which is invaluable in an age of social media ‘wanderlust.’
Total VIP moment.
We set up a spot on the rocks and were quickly in the water…which was perfect! My experience in waterfall swimming is pretty limited due to the iceberg temperatures of the pools, so this was a dream come true.
We swam around in a moment of bliss, towards the falls and then back to the rocks. There were people there now. But they weren’t getting in the pool with us…they were walking behind the falls instead.
It seemed there was a bit of an unspoken turn-taking happening. As they headed back towards the pool, we started along the path they’d uncovered. Over slippery rocks and across a log and we had arrived at what would become one of my most cherished moments of magic.
The sun was beaming through the sparkling water which appeared to dance as its pour was guided by the wind. I had to get closer. I had to stand in it.
And then there I was, twirling in an inexplicable moment of gold.
A moment of youth and wonder.
A moment of light and life.
