Peaks
We do this thing where we try to beat the sun and when we win, it’s a win so big that it fills your soul for the rest of the week.
Mt Charleston silently towers over Vegas, sitting in the layers of mountains that make up the background. The elevation is double the height of anything in Red Rock and the peaks are the exact opposite in color. Gray, green and blue with a light breeze. The perfect escape from the heat in the summer, and the perfect chilly kickstart to your day in the fall.
We woke up at 3:45 for this one. Pitch black, running on a few hours of sleep. We stuffed our packs with some morning snacks and bundled up.
It was still black when we parked and realized we didn’t pack any headlamps. With an hour left of the dark of the night, we did this hike by the moon.
I kept watch for glowing eyes and felt pretty sure that we were walking with mountain lions, even if we couldn't see them.
The night sky began to fade and we looked for a spot to catch the sun peek up over the horizon.
